Duke University is a private research university located in Durham, North Carolina, United States. Methodists established the university along with Quakers in the present-day city of Trinity in 1838. The university moved to Durham in 1892.
In 1924, the tobacco and electrical power industrialist James Buchanan Duke established The Duke Endowment, and the school was named in honor of his late dad, Washington Duke. The campus spans over 8,600 acres (3,500 hectares) on three contiguous sub-campuses in Durham and a marine lab in Beaufort.
How to Apply for Duke University
For a successful application to get admitted to Howard University, follow the following process:
1. Complete the Common Application
To submit your application to Howard University, you need to visit the Common Application, Coalition Application, or QuestBridge Application website to create your account and get started.
When you begin your application, you’ll have to choose one of two options for your academic path, including liberal arts at Trinity College of Arts & Sciences or engineering at the Pratt School of Engineering. It is also necessary to select which application deadline you’re planning to apply to. Duke provides the following deadlines:
- Early decision applications, due on November 1
- The regular application deadline is January 3 (or December 20, in case you would like priority consideration in the interview with alums)
Decisions are made public to applicants at the early decision deadline in mid-December and between the late months of March and the beginning of April for the regular deadline decision. To assist you in getting all the elements of the application process completed at the right time, Duke provides a checklist for applications and an extensive list of deadlines and dates for each of the decision-making programs.
As part of the Common Application process, you will pay a non-refundable fee of $45 for the application.
You must have your current transcripts from all colleges/universities attended, undergraduate and graduate, with nine (9) or more credits earned. Transcripts that are not official, whether current or final, are uploaded on the Additional Material section of the application and will be accepted. The transcripts must be officially certified and submitted when you are accepted, either on paper or electronically, by the Registrar at each institution in the Graduate Student Service Center.
3. Two Letters of Recommendation
In order to be considered in the admissions process, Duke University requires two letters of recommendation.
- A letter of recommendation written by a teacher at a high school that is provided by your counselor on Common App or Naviance (highly suggested) must be submitted.
- A letter of recommendation from a school teacher in the high school, submitted by your teacher on Naviance or Common App (highly suggested) is required.
